Watch The Other Players Carefully

If a player who has been playing conservatively all night suddenly starts raising the pot, chances are that he has a good hand. This may be a good time to fold, if you are not holding anything worthwhile. This is not a good time to bluff because if he truly has a good hand and is rising, he is not going to back down. One of the most important poker tactics you can learn is how to watch the other players carefully and learn their moves. They are human and prone to get excited as well as let their guard down. 

Listen Instead of Talking

Some players have poker tactics that consist of talking all of the time during the game. This is meant to keep the other players off guard. It can distract people and cause them to make a bad move. This can work well to the advantage of the chatty player, until he gets a hand that shuts him up. Then the whole table notices his change in behavior. 

By keeping your mouth shut and playing quietly, you will not be exhibited any behavior changes that can be detected by other players. You want to make sure that no one can read your hand. Listen to what the others are saying, be polite, but concentrate on your own hand and keep your mouth shut.

Do Not Drink

Many table games offer free drinks for players, especially in Las Vegas. They are not doing this to be nice. They are hoping that you get drunk and do not care what you are doing. If you are playing poker for money or any other gambling game seriously, do not drink alcohol. Alcohol is not usually served in poker tournaments because professionals know better, but it is served at table games. You are not in a wild west saloon - stay away from the booze when playing. Do Not Lose More Than You Can Afford To Lose

There have been stories about people who have lost homes, cars and other items in poker games. Do not let that happen to you. The reason that this happened to them is because they got carried away and bit off more than they could chew. Do not enter a game with no limit and end up losing your house because you think you can come back. Put aside a certain amount of money that you can afford to lose and once that is gone, quit. This can be the most important of all poker tactics that you an ever learn.
