In most tournaments, there is a buy in. You cannot just enter a tournament and expect to play for cash. You will buy into the tournament and be issued a certain number of chips. Also be aware that despite coughing up the money for the buy in, you may not make the finals. Only a certain percentage of those who buy into a tournament actually make the cut and get to play for money. 

Realize You Will Lose 25 Percent Of The Time

Although losing may not be considered one of the most popular poker tournament strategies, it is a fact of the game. You should be prepared to lose at least 25 percent of the time when you play poker, whether it is in a tournament or in a regular table game.
